Your photo is sent to an AI model via Vercel AI Gateway to remove the background, then processed locally. It isn’t stored.

Three steps, no account

  1. Add a photo

Drag it onto the amber sheet, choose files, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl/⌘+V. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF all work.

  2. The AI finds the subject

Your photo is sent to an image model through Vercel AI Gateway, which returns the subject on a transparent background. Step through the raw mask above to see the result before any edits.

  3. Download or restyle

Save a transparent PNG, or put the subject on white, a colour, a blurred copy of the original, your own photo or an AI-generated scene.

Who uses it, and for what

Online sellers. Marketplaces such as Amazon ask for the main product image on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). Pick White, crop tight to the subject, add a soft shadow.

Profile and ID photos. Cut yourself out, drop in a plain colour, square crop. Keep Softness high so hair blends naturally.

Designers. Paste a screenshot, copy the cutout straight back to the clipboard and into Figma, Canva, Keynote or Slides.

Logos and signatures. Flat artwork doesn’t need AI; the logo and signature tools remove the paper colour exactly and keep edges smooth.

What “transparent” actually means

A photo is a grid of pixels with red, green and blue values. A cutout adds a fourth number, alpha, that says how opaque each pixel is. Solid parts of the subject get 100%, the background gets 0%, and edge pixels (hair, fur, a blurry sleeve) get something in between.

That middle ground is what separates a cutout that looks pasted-on from one that looks photographed. It’s also why you must save as PNG or WebP: JPG has no alpha channel, so it flattens the edge onto a solid colour.

Try the slider: change the alpha of one edge pixel and the new background colour, and watch the maths.

Why a cutout needs “half-transparent” pixels

Zoom into the edge of a hair strand and each pixel is only partly hair. The PNG stores that as alpha (0–100%), and whatever you put behind it shows through by exactly that amount.

New background

50% × hair + 50% × navy = rgb(100,75,73)

This is the “over” operator from Porter and Duff’s 1984 paper Compositing Digital Images, still how every editor, browser and game engine layers images.

Which download format to pick

FormatKeeps transparencyBest for

Questions people ask

Is QuickCut really free, with no signup?

Yes. There is no account, no credit system and no watermark, and downloads are full resolution.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

The photo you drop is sent to an AI model (openai/gpt-image-2.5-flare) through Vercel AI Gateway to remove its background, then the result comes back to your browser for editing and export. It is not stored on our servers. The logo, signature and white-background tools don’t send anything anywhere.

Why does the cutout take a few seconds?

Each photo is processed by an AI model on Vercel AI Gateway, which typically takes 5–15 seconds depending on the image. There’s no large model download; it just needs a moment to think.

How do I remove a background on my phone?

Open this page, tap “Drop a photo here” and pick a picture from your gallery. It works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. The AI work happens on the server, so even older phones handle it.

What resolution is the downloaded PNG?

The same as your original, up to about 12 megapixels on computers and 5 megapixels on phones. The AI finds the subject on a smaller copy, and the mask is then scaled up and applied to your full-size photo, so detail isn’t lost. The tool tells you if it had to scale your photo down.

Is there a watermark or a low-resolution preview trap?

No. Many removers give a free low-res preview and charge for the HD file. QuickCut downloads the full-resolution result straight away, with no watermark.

How do I remove a background in Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop or on iPhone?

See our step-by-step guides for each app in the how-to section. They cover the exact menus, what each app can’t do, and fixes for common problems.

The edge around hair looks rough. How do I fix it?

Raise “Softness” to keep more of the fine, semi-transparent strands. Use “Shrink” to drop a leftover halo, and the Restore brush for anything the AI cut off.

Can I remove backgrounds from many images at once?

Yes. Drop or select up to 20 photos. They are processed one after another, and “All as ZIP” downloads every finished cutout with the same background and edge settings.

Which images work best?

A clear subject with some contrast against its surroundings: products, people, pets, cars, food, furniture. Flat artwork such as logos and signatures on white paper is better handled by the logo and signature tools, which knock out the colour exactly instead of guessing.
