When a PNG is the right call

Screenshots and text. JPG compression smears sharp edges and adds speckles around letters; PNG keeps them crisp.

Anything you’ll edit again. Lossless means saving repeatedly doesn’t degrade it.

Transparency. Only PNG and WebP can store see-through areas. If what you actually want is a picture without its background, use the transparent background maker, which cuts the subject out and saves a PNG in one go.

How do I convert a JPG to PNG?

Drop the JPG files on the amber sheet. Each is re-encoded as a PNG in your browser, and you can download them one by one or as a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded.

Will converting to PNG make the background transparent?

No. Converting only changes the file format; the pixels stay the same, including the background. To remove the background as well, use the transparent background maker.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so it won’t add any new loss, but it can’t restore detail that JPG compression already removed. The file will usually get larger.

Can I convert a screenshot from the clipboard?

Yes. Copy a screenshot and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac) anywhere on this page; it appears in the list ready to download as PNG.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?

Safari on iPhone and Mac can decode HEIC, so the converter works there. Chrome and Firefox on Windows usually can’t. On iPhone you can also set Settings → Camera → Formats to “Most Compatible” to shoot JPG.
