What happens to your photo
The cutout runs in your browser. When you press “Generate background”, only the description you typed and the frame shape (square, portrait or landscape) are sent to an image model through Vercel AI Gateway. The picture comes back and is layered behind your subject on your device.
Because the model never sees your subject, it can’t distort your product or your face, a common complaint with editing tools that repaint the whole image.
If the generator is busy or you hit the hourly limit, every other background option still works.
Questions people ask
How does the AI background generator work?
First, your subject is cut out on your own device. Then you describe a scene (“walnut desk, soft window light”) and an image model generates a matching backdrop, which is placed behind your subject. Only your words are sent to the model, never your photo.
Is it free?
Yes, with a fair-use limit of a few scenes per hour per visitor, since each generated image costs us money. Cutting out, recolouring and blurring are unlimited because they run on your device.
What should I write in the description?
Describe a place, a surface and the light: “sunlit bathroom shelf with eucalyptus, white tiles”, “dark slate surface, moody side light”. Leave out the subject itself; the generator is told to leave the centre clear for it.
Who owns the generated backgrounds?
You may use them freely, including commercially. As with any AI-generated image, don’t describe trademarked logos, real people or copyrighted characters.
Why doesn’t the lighting match my subject?
The model can’t see your photo, so tell it where the light comes from: “light from the left”, “overhead soft light”, “warm evening sun from behind”. A soft drop shadow also helps.
