How to remove a background in Figma

Figma can mask images, and newer versions add an AI Remove background action for images.

You’ll need: Figma in the browser or desktop app. The AI action depends on your plan and Figma AI availability.

  1. Select the image

Click the image layer on the canvas.

  2. Use Remove background

Where available, open the Actions menu (or right-click) and choose Remove background.

  3. Or mask it manually

Draw a shape or pen path over the subject, select it with the image (the shape must sit directly below the image in the layers list) and press Use as mask.

  4. Export as PNG

In the Export panel choose PNG; transparent areas stay transparent.

Quickest route

Copy a cutout from QuickCut with the “Copy image” button and paste it straight onto the Figma canvas.

What Figma can’t do well

The AI action is not on every plan; manual masks have hard edges unless you feather them.

Questions people ask

Why can’t I find Remove background in Figma?

Figma AI features vary by plan and rollout. If it isn’t available, cut the image out elsewhere and paste the PNG.

Does Figma keep PNG transparency?

Yes, both when you paste or import a transparent PNG and when you export.

Is there a faster way than Figma?

If you just need the cutout, drop the picture into QuickCut’s free background remover: no signup, a transparent PNG in seconds, with edge controls and erase/restore brushes. Then open the PNG in Figma.
