How to remove a background on iPhone
Since iOS 16, iPhone can lift the subject out of a photo by itself: no app to install and no account.
You’ll need: iPhone XS or newer running iOS 16 or later.
Open the photo in Photos
Any picture with a clear subject works: a person, a pet, a product.
Touch and hold the subject
Keep your finger on it until a white glowing outline traces it and the subject lifts slightly.
Choose Copy or Share
Copy lets you paste the cutout into Messages, Notes or another app. Share lets you save it as a new image or add it as a sticker.
For files: use the Files app
In Files, touch and hold an image, choose Quick Actions → Remove Background. A new PNG with a transparent background is saved next to the original.
What iPhone can’t do well
You can’t pick which object is the subject, refine the edge, or add a new background. When the outline misses part of the subject, there’s no fix-up brush.
Questions people ask
Why does nothing happen when I hold the photo?
Subject lifting needs iOS 16 or later on an iPhone XS or newer, and a photo with a clearly separated subject. Busy scenes or very small subjects may not be detected.
Does the iPhone cutout keep transparency?
Yes when you save it via Files Quick Actions (PNG). When copied into some apps, like Mail, it may be shown on white.
Is there a faster way than iPhone?
If you just need the cutout, drop the picture into QuickCut’s free background remover: no signup, a transparent PNG in seconds, with edge controls and erase/restore brushes. Then open the PNG in any app.
