How to remove a background in Microsoft Word
Word has its own background removal for pictures inside a document. It’s handy for logos and signatures, but basic for photos.
You’ll need: Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2010 or later on Windows, or Word for Mac 2011 or later.
Select the picture
Click the image in your document so the Picture Format tab appears.
Choose Remove Background
Picture Format → Remove Background. Word marks what it thinks is background in magenta.
Mark areas to keep or remove
Use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove, drawing short strokes over parts Word got wrong.
Keep changes
Click Keep Changes. To reuse it elsewhere, right-click the picture → Save as Picture → PNG.
For a solid white background
Picture Format → Color → Set Transparent Color, then click the white area. Best for signatures and simple logos, though it can leave a light fringe.
What Microsoft Word can’t do well
Edges are hard and blocky around hair and fur, there’s no soft edge, and Word’s web version doesn’t offer the tool.
Questions people ask
Why don’t I see Remove Background in Word?
It isn’t available in Word for the web, and it only appears when a picture (not a shape or SmartArt) is selected. Use the desktop app.
How do I make my signature transparent in Word?
Insert the photo of your signature, then Picture Format → Color → Set Transparent Color and click the paper. For a cleaner edge, cut it out with QuickCut’s signature tool first and insert the PNG.
Is there a faster way than Microsoft Word?
If you just need the cutout, drop the picture into QuickCut’s free background remover: no signup, a transparent PNG in seconds, with edge controls and erase/restore brushes. Then open the PNG in Microsoft Word.
